Part automaton, part philosopher, and part problem, the ACME Mechanical Duck of 1844 was the first bird to develop a “strong sense of self.” It escaped from the Paris World’s Fair and has been spotted annually migrating between France and Belgium. ACME insists the warranty is still valid.
